The Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre was a massacre of the Huguenot leaders in paris on August 23-24, 1572. To increase her power, Queen Catherine de' medici intrigued with the Catholic faction, led by the House of guise, against the Protestants, led by the House of condé. Jealous of the power of the Huguenot leader Admiral Gaspard de coligny, the adviser to her son, King charles ix, she ordered his assassination. The plot failed, however, and the Huguenot leaders who had gathered in paris for the wedding of Catherine's daughter, marguerite de valois, to Henri de Navarre (henry iv), demanded an investigation. instead, the Huguenot leaders and many of their followers, numbering in the thousands, were murdered. The first to be killed was Coligny. The massacre then spread from Paris to the provinces, with many more victims (see wars of religion).
